Why 90% of potential customers only contact 10% of small businesses

Consumers are literally in the driver’s seat when using the internet to choose a small business. So it is critical for small businesses to understand what it is that has such a huge influence on who they choose.  For the purpose of this article, we will only focus on service-based businesses.

Most service-based businesses are reactionary based which means a consumer is only looking for them when something comes up and they find themselves needing to react. For example, most consumers are only looking for a plumber when they have a leak or a consumer is only looking for an oral surgeon when they need an emergency tooth extraction. 

When a consumer is in this reactionary mode, 9 times out of 10 they will search for a business and make a decision on who to contact that same day.

This is why it is extremely important to understand how a consumer determines who they will call.

If a consumer needs a dentist they might search for “Dentist near me” or “Dentist + their city”.

The most influential results are the REVIEWS from sites like Google, Yelp, Angie’s List, etc.

It is the select few companies that specifically focus on capturing online reviews on a continuous basis from these Tier 1 reviews sites (Google, Yelp, Angie’s List, etc) that end up capturing the vast majority of these customers.

Small businesses using generic review platforms like Demand Force, Light House 360, RepX, Yodle and Birdeye find themselves collecting reviews that have little impact on potential capturing new customers. The reason why these reviews have very little visibility is that consumers are reading reviews on the major review sites like Google, Yelp, Angie’s List, etc. and most reviews from these review platforms are hidden on their own websites and customers don’t see them.

Secondly, these review platforms do very little to help businesses increase their reviews on the major sites.
